In 1911, Harvey Haggard was immortalized for his endevors to try and win the race that encluding:
1. taking a train to the mountain,
2. Running up the mountain ,
3. running down the mountain,
4. taking a train back to bellingham (which wrecked),
5. hopping in a horse and buggy (which wore out),
6. riding horseback (until thrown off),
7. and was finally strapped into a Buick to try and win the first ever Mount Baker Marathon.

Even though he lost the race by just over thirty minutes, his efforts made Harvey Haggard the first and only person to ever complete seven legs of the Marathon, though I am sure he would have been happy to have skipped a few of those.

If Haggard were able to watch a SKi to Sea race today he might smile while pondering where they got the idea to use to many modes of travel to get from Mount Baker to Bellingham.

What historical stories/perspectives do you have from the early marathons or previous Ski to Sea events? Post them here.
Have questions about prior events, you are more than welcome to post them here as well and maybe someone can answer them for you.

Very Happy
