Doug,
We have people practicing the course weeks before the race starts. We also try to keep the course groomed a week prior to the race so people can practice (this is dependent on weather conditions) on the course as they might find it on race day.
The course is not flagged until the day before the race but it is easy to determine the route without the flagging.
To practice on the 24th is OK and is done by many of the racers.
