| First time canoeing in the race. Excited and confident but a bit anxious. All went well most of the way - we negotiated the turns, powered through the eddies, avoided collisions with fellow racers - but then...rounding a turn we got too close to the gravel bar and the back eddy grabbed the canoe, we hit the beach broadside and dumped it. Luckily, our feet touched bottom and we were able to scramble ashore, dump out the water, put everything back in the canoe, and get back on the river in just two minutes! The water felt good! Cool! Refreshing! Catcalls and jeers from the (I assume) drunken crowd on the opposite shore - stupid spectators anyway - but we were soon out of earshot, and on our way to the finish line, exhausted, sore, but not overly hot (or dry)! --Kit |
